Construction Updates

Project Description
Baptist Health Deaconess Madisonville (BHDM) is a 175,000 square foot seven-story hospital that dates to 1977, with additions constructed in 1984, 1993, 2001, and 2010. This project will facilitate enhanced patient care, improved access, more efficient throughput, and deliver a greater diversity of hospital services. The project’s infrastructure upgrades will allow for increased patient volume and support expansion of the hospital’s service area and population outreach.
The project will include improvements to the Emergency Department, Behavioral Health Unit, Surgery, Oncology, and Infrastructure, as follows:
Emergency Department
The existing Emergency Department consists of approximately 11,655 square feet and is operating at capacity and requires expansion. The Emergency Department currently attends to approximately 80 patients per day, with twenty-one Treatment Positions, four of which are included in two Trauma Rooms. The current layout is no longer efficient with today’s workflows and equipment and requires expansion and updating.
The renovation and expansion of the Emergency Department will include the construction of a new one-story addition of 5,645 square feet. This addition will feature a new patient receiving canopy area. The exterior appearance of the reception area will be designed as an attractive feature for the project, complementing the existing building. The interior renovation of the Emergency Department, when coupled with this addition, will provide a new design layout that will improve sight lines and departmental flow by increasing the number of treatment rooms and enhancing patient privacy. The new layout will improve the location of Registration and Security and will include two Behavioral Health Treatment Rooms located away from the entranceway, adding additional protection for our staff and visitors. The new design will increase storage capacity and include a dedicated physician and resident work area.
Behavioral Health
The existing Behavioral Health Unit consists of 17,672 square feet. The Adult Inpatient Program's patient demand has grown over time from an original count of 12 beds to the current number of 15 beds.
The Behavioral Health Renovation work will dramatically improve the capacity to serve this increasing patient population. Programmatically, the new configuration will include a 7-bed Geriatric Unit and a 15-bed Adult Unit. Additionally, the renovation will improve patient and staff safety.
Surgery
The existing Surgery Department consists of eleven operating rooms. Areas of the surgical platform and support spaces have not been renovated in over 40 years. Due to the existing layout and workflow conditions, the current turnover time between patients is approximately one hour.
This scope of work in the Surgery Department includes a new 10,000 square foot addition and a 14,978 square foot renovation of existing space. The new Surgery Department addition will include ten new 700 square foot operating rooms, as compared to the current operating room size of 400-450 square feet. This would reposition prep/recovery area to an alternate space during construction and then be filled in with new prep/recovery space when completed. This plan would move the sterile processing area from another area to be relocated to a space adjacent to the new operating rooms, creating efficiencies for nursing and sterile processing staff. The planned remodeled orthopedic surgery area should expedite surgery setup time and the overall surgical process by upwards of one hour.
Oncology
The existing entry to oncology is antiquated and overcrowded, without any restrooms within the lobby area. The Medical Oncology space has only six exam rooms for four providers. The Infusion area has eight chairs and three stretcher positions in the primary infusion space. There are currently five chairs in the secondary infusion space. Current demand for Infusion services supports an additional ten positions.
This scope of work in the Oncology Department will include the construction of a new 5,713 square foot addition, plus 7,500 square feet of renovation within the perimeter of the existing space. The renovated entry will expand into waiting area. The renovated Medical Oncology space will include six Exam Rooms for Medical Oncology. The new Infusion Addition area will consist of twenty total Infusion positions, six of which should be stretcher positions. The new Radiation Oncology space will include two Exam Rooms.
Infrastructure
The mechanical infrastructure upgrades will accomplish a number of goals, including: i) provide code-required improvements to access and separate critical equipment; ii) address urgent concerns for critical equipment replacement, and; iii) provide an elastic central infrastructure foundation that is sustainable and can be adapted or expanded for future needs. The deficiencies of the chilled water plant will be addressed with new, higher efficiency and higher capacity chillers. A new refrigerant monitoring system will ensure that the plant is code compliant. Additionally, a new domestic hot water system will be installed. With this freed capacity, the updated steam plant will be a sustainable solution for the facility’s expanded needs. A 650 square feet addition will be built adjacent to the existing central energy plant to provide code-required separation and access to the fire pump. Air handling units will be replaced with custom modular units. The normal power system for the facility will be upgraded.
